Remember when using airnav to click on advanced search and add private and ultralight airports to your listings. You will be amazed at all the private airports there are.
Also go to google earth and add airports to your preferences and you can see most of the airports when you search an area. Plus you can pre-fly the area to get an idea of the terrain.

Something else you can do is to talk to the local airport manager where you fly. He/she may know of friendly airports in the area and especially who to contact for permission. Also, attend local fly ins, pancake breakfasts and other local airport events as many of these same people are there. Be friendly, introduce yourself and be informed. Make nice and the invitations will open up. A cold call directly to a private airport owner does not always work. Meeting them in a public gathering seems to work fine.

That's great advice!  Your advice works!
That's what I did when I first started flying at my airport.

It never hurts to spread a little sugar!

Not only that, private airport owners are thinking more liability than anything else. If they see you as informed, concerned and knowledgeable they are more interested in hearing about you. And don't be surprised if they may ask about you to others. I like to start, after getting introduced with, "would you mine if I fly-by and do a touch-n-go now and then?" I frequently get met with, "Go ahead and land and say hi!"

I have only been refused at one and the owner said we shouldn't be allowed to fly at all. I just walked away.

Here is some more advice.
Join the EAA, AOPA and any other flying clubs around you. I found out by going to meetings you will have an opportunity to meet a lot of people who can introduce you to private strips and airport managers. I am VP of my EAA chapter (216 Cross Keys NJ) and have found it to be a great help in getting permissions. I also use this method when traveling. I will call that local EAA chapter and get some names of people who can help get me into the airports to fly.

Bob,

I like your approach.  It's like "how could they say no"
when you are polite and non threatening.

I thought of something else we all could do, and this is something I do now and then. I stop into my local airport, without anything to fly, just to sit and watch the airplanes. Sometimes, I travel to nearby airports other than my normal airport. I frequently take my radio and listen to any traffic. I also check out the FBO and I usually purchase my chart or FAR/AIM, or anything else I may need. I know you get them cheaper elsewhere, but why not support your local airport?

Even if you don't fly there since you may fly from your favorite field, you get to meet a few people, and when you spend even a few dollars, it gets noticed. At that notice leads to acceptance. Besides, your local airport costs money to operate, why not spend just a few dollars to help them out?

Also, notices of nearby events are frequently posted at the FBO. Make plans to attend.

The key here is participation. It is more than saying, "I have a right to fly here." It is saying, "I want to be a part of this community of pilots." I think you will build a more stable common ground that way.

Besides, it's fun.
